Course description

Medication errors are defined as any event that may cause or lead to an inappropriate medication use or patient harm. This program is intended to increase the awareness of medication errors by healthcare professionals and will focus on the medication administration process in eliminating medication errors. This class will acknowledge the resources available to promote healthcare provider wellbeing and improve psychological health. With a collaborative effort, the incidents that can lead to patient and staff harm will be reduced.

Prerequisites and preparation

  1. Complete Promoting Medication Safety 2.0 Module no more than 30 days prior to the live class
    • Audio required
    • Estimated time to complete: 2.5 hours
    • Can be completed over time by signing in and out of the module—your work will be saved
    • Topics covered in this module will include:  
      • Medication Errors: Scope of the Problem
      • Error Disclosure and the CANDOR Program
      • Medication Administration Challenges and Solutions: Pyxis, BCMA, and Smart Infusion Pumps
      • Performing a Medication Administration Tracer
      • Order Communication and Documentation
      • Promoting Resilience through a Peer Responder Program
  2. Review Policy 4055 Medication Administration (10 minutes).
  3. Perform one Medication Administration Tracer/Audit on the unit (15 minutes).

Estimated length of time to complete the pre-course modules, policy review and medication administration tracer is 3 hours. The virtual session is 4 hours. A total of 7 hours is equivalent to the 7 C.E. contact hours you will receive.

Modules and pre-class assignments are to be completed no more than 30 days prior to class. In-class sessions will build upon content introduced during pre-work. Pre-work is required for C.E. credit and will be verified prior to the start of class.

Virtual session requirements

This course will be offered in a virtual environment. Class coordinator(s) will provide you access to the course meeting link one week prior to class.

Follow the virtual participation guidelines, including being on camera, engaging in activities, and attesting to participation.

To prepare for this class, do the following:

  • Ensure access to audio and microphone on desktop/laptop or Smart device (may use call-in option for audio/speaker).
  • Ensure access to a reliable wi-fi connection.

Accommodations for learners who need a quiet space, a laptop, and wi-fi can be provided. Contact course coordinator(s) at least one week prior to class if accommodations are needed.

C.E. contact hours

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider number CEP 26, for 7.0 contact hours.

The UC Davis Health Center for Professional Practice of Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Attendees must successfully complete pre-work and attend class to receive C.E. credit; no partial credit can be awarded. Attendees will not receive C.E. credit if they are more than 20 minutes late.

$25 registration deposit. Registration deposit is returned upon completion of class. Cancellation must be requested five days prior to class date to receive deposit refund. Please register through UC Learning Center and call our office at 916-734-9790 with your deposit by credit card.

Registrations are approved only after your deposit is provided.

This class is only open to UC Davis Health employees.
