Inhaled Statins Show Promise as Effective Asthma Treatment
In an NIH-funded study, UC Davis Health pulmonologists are exploring an innovative approach to determine whether statins may help treat obstructive airway diseases by delivering the medication via inhalation. The study’s principal investigator is Amir Zeki, M.D., professor of internal medicine specializing in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at UC Davis Health. The team plans to expand its research with a Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of delivering statins by inhalation to treat asthma and COPD.

Comprehensive COPD Clinic to Reduce Hospital Readmissions
The Comprehensive COPD Clinic at UC Davis Health has created the first remote patient monitoring program in the Sacramento region for high-risk patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Data collected is uploaded to a dashboard on the patient’s electronic health record and is monitored daily by respiratory therapists in the UC Davis Health Reversible Obstructive Airway Disease program.

Lung Cancer in Non-Smoking Asian American Women
UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is helping to spread the word about the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Female Asian Never Smoker (FANS) study. The study is being led by researchers from UC Davis Health, UCSF Health and Stanford Medicine. One of the principal study investigators is Moon Chen, Jr., M.P.H., Ph.D., associate director of the cancer center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement.
