Profunda Artery Perforator (PAP) Flap

Breast reconstruction using your own body's tissue from your abdomen with a PAP flap has the advantages of forming a natural appearing and feeling breast without a foreign body that lasts for your lifetime. The upper and inner thigh tissue is removed with its blood vessels and transplanted to the chest, where they are sutured together to blood vessels in the chest to assume a new role as living tissue under the breast skin. Because the blood vessels are so small (~2mm diameter), this requires a process called microsurgery in which a microscope is used to help sew the blood vessels together. The resulting scar on the thighs either is oriented under the buttock or down the middle and back of the thigh, depending on your anatomy.

Most patients will be hospitalized from two to three days but this varies for the individual patient. Despite the increased complexity of the surgery, we strive to make your recovery very predictable.
