Human Resources Requirements

Upon acceptance to the UC Davis Medical Center Dietetic Internship program, the accepted applicant must undergo a California State Criminal Background Check and obtain a health clearance from Employee Health Services, at no cost to the intern, which satisfies the requirements for supervised practice experiences occurring in UC Davis Health facilities. Interns are responsible for the expenses of any additional background checks, drug testing or health clearance, if required by community or elective rotation supervised practice facilities.

Financial Aid and Student Loans

Dietetic interns are not enrolled as a student at UC Davis and are, therefore, not eligible for financial aid (student loans) or University housing.  For deferral of student loan repayment, if allowed by the intern's lender, the Internship Director or Internship Coordinator can provide documentation of the status as a dietetic intern, or complete documents from the loan agency, to verify the intern's status in an accredited certificate program.

Scholarships

Dietetic interns may apply for outside scholarships on an individual basis. The California Dietetic Association Foundation (CDAF) has scholarship programs for dietetic interns who attend a California dietetic internship program. For more information please visit www.dietitian.org or contact the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at 310-822-0177.

Housing

Dietetic interns are required to locate their own housing.  There are a variety of small houses and apartment complexes located near UC Davis Medical Center. Rental costs depend on location and type of unit.  Housing arrangements need to be finalized a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the start of the internship.  Dietetic interns will not be granted time-off for moving or housing related appointments once the internship starts.

Transportation

Although most rotations are located at the UC Davis Medical Center and walking distance from several neighborhoods, dietetic interns are required to have reliable transportation to get to off-site rotations and field trips.  Interns who use a personal vehicle for a scheduled learning experience are required to provide evidence of liability insurance which meets UC standards. Minimum required insurance coverage is:

  • $50,000 for personal injury or death of one person;
  • $100,000 for injury to, or death of, two or more persons in one accident; and
  • $50,000 for property damage

Insurance

UC Davis Medical Center dietetic interns are covered for professional liability while performing duties within the course and scope of their UC Davis Health System training program appointment. Coverage is provided by the Regents of the University of California Self-Insurance Program.

Personal health insurance for medical, dental or vision services is not provided by UC Davis Medical Center.  It is strongly recommended that the intern purchase his or her own health insurance before admittance into the dietetic internship program.

Computer/Internet Access

It is expected that dietetic interns will have access to a computer and internet at home while participating in the program.

Meal Benefit

Interns receive a $10.00 credit per day for use in the main hospital cafeteria and satellite cafes located at the Ellison Ambulatory Care Center and Education Building. Meal credits are not saved for non-scheduled workdays or transferred to another person.
