Alex Peck, a member of the inaugural class of nurse practitioner residents, shares her thoughts on the residency program and the opportunities it presents to recent N.P. graduates.

How to apply

Applications for the 2024-2025 cohort of the N.P. residency are now open.

The two-part application process includes completion of an online application at the UC Davis Recruit website and a follow-up Supplemental Questionnaire which is sent to all applicants who meet the basic, minimum qualifications.

Applications are not accepted after the final deadline. Invited finalists participate in a mandatory interview conducted via Zoom in March.

How to submit an application

Step 1 —Complete an online application at UC Davis Recruit. Note: the system automatically saves your progress as you work through the application.

Required documents include:

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (C.V.): must include all education, leadership positions, community service experience, research activities, quality improvement projects, teaching experience, professional certifications and at least five years of work experience. A C.V. is an opportunity for you to tell us the story of your professional life. Applicants who have not completed their master’s or D.N.P. program prior to submitting their application must indicate an expected graduation date in their C.V.
  • Applicants are encouraged to provide a separate, written explanation for any gaps in work exceeding three months.
  • Contact information for two references who can speak to your qualifications and capabilities as a nurse practitioner: one must be a supervisor or someone who supervised you in your clinical practice. This may be a preceptor if the experience was in primary care and lasted at least 160 hours. Your two references are contacted after you become a finalist.
  • Personal statement of purpose (see information below).
  • Statement of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion (see information below).
  • N.P program transcript: graduates should submit a final transcript (official or unofficial). Current students should submit a transcript that shows up to and including their most recently completed semester or quarter.
  • Explanation of gaps in work that exceed three months.

Please note, additional materials outside these required elements are not considered.

Step 2 — Look for an email referencing a required Supplemental Questionnaire that is sent to you after the application period closes, your completed online application is submitted on the UC Davis Recruit website and it is deemed that you meet minimum qualifications. You must complete this questionnaire within three business days.

Step 3 —Develop your plan to obtain all required documents that must be submitted as outlined on the Credentialing Documents Checklist PDFs below that applies to you.

For applicants who completed an N.P. program between April 1 and Dec. 31, 2023:

For applicants who completed or expect to complete an N.P. program between Jan. 1 and June 15, 2024:

Please highlight your most relevant academic preparation and motivation, scholarly work, clinical interests, and career goals as well as background and experiences (see experiences and attributes above) for pursuing this primary care residency with a focus on underserved communities (1,000-word limit). This personal statement is how the search committee gets to know your potential as a successful applicant.

  • Preparation and motivation may include your academic, clinical and research experiences that prepared you for this residency program. For example, you might speak to coursework, employment, exhibitions, fieldwork, foreign language proficiency, independent study, internships, laboratory activities, presentations, publications, studio projects, teaching and travel or study abroad along with your motivation or passion for advanced practice in primary care, particularly for the urban or rural underserved populations.
  • Interests, specialty areas and career goals may include your research interests, disciplinary subfields, areas of specialization and professional objectives.
  • Background and experiences may include any educational, familial, cultural, economic or social experiences, challenges, community service, outreach activities, residency and citizenship, first-generation college status or opportunities relevant to your academic journey; how your life experiences contribute to the social, intellectual or cultural diversity within a campus community and your chosen field; or how you might serve under-represented and underserved segments of society with your clinical education.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to prepare the documents listed on the checklist that applies to their specific situation (determined by graduation date and location of N.P. program). The items are required at various points before the residency begins. Please refer to the Credentialing Document Checklists (see links to PDFs in the blue box above).

It will be helpful for you to be familiar with the following items. Refer to the Credentialing Documents Checklist that applies to you for specific deadlines for submission of these items. Deadlines will not be extended.

  • California R.N. license (applicants outside of California can apply for a California R.N. license by endorsement)
  • National board certification (Either AANP or ANCC)
  • California Nurse Practitioner certification
  • California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing number certification
  • Schedule II Controlled Substances course
  • DEA certification (must have California advanced practice certification and furnishing number to apply)
  • National Provider Identification (NPI) number (necessary prior to applying for Medicare and Medi-Cal insurance)

The residency position is a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment without possibility of extension. NP-PRACTICE residents receive a salary*, full benefits including paid vacation and holidays.

Residents should expect to work primarily day and early evening hours, Monday through Friday; however, there may also be a required skills training, conferences, or clinic days that take place on a weekend.

Residents are paired with experienced physicians or nurse practitioners to provide clinical and practice guidance and support at the practice site. However, this is not a student or remedial experience. N.P. residents are expected to manage clinical patients with increasing independence through the year. Residents are also paired with an experienced N.P. professional role mentor and a recent alumna of the program for additional support.

Successful residents complete all 12 months of the residency, build a portfolio suitable to use to seek employment, receive a letter of recommendation for employers and are considered for open positions at UC Davis Health or potentially at FQHC partner sites.

Residents cannot pursue employment opportunities until the last three months of the program and must complete the full 12-month residency.
