Our Diagnostic Imaging Services

At UC Davis Health, you won’t have to wait long for diagnostic imaging. We conduct timely scans providing important information about your symptoms so you can get the therapies you need. You have access to the full range of radiological studies.

Breast Imaging

You may need breast imaging to check for unusual growths, such as tumors, cysts and cancer. In addition to mammograms, we offer breast MRIs and image-guided biopsies.

CT Scans

CT (computed tomography) scans take a series of X-rays at multiple angles and special technology assembles them into highly detailed images. Our commitment to CT excellence has earned our program prestigious American College of Radiology® ACR accreditation

Interventional Radiology

Radiologists with additional training perform interventional procedures that use imaging to guide tiny instruments through blood vessels. Interventional radiology helps diagnose leaks, narrowing, blockages, blood clots and other issues.

MRI

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to show the fine details of bones and soft tissue.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine studies involve taking a small dose of radioactive substance by mouth or injection. We then use various techniques to track the substance enabling us to assess body functions and cell activity.

PET Scan

PET (positron emission tomography) scans are a type of nuclear medicine study that shows abnormal cell activity, such as signs of cancer or neurological disorders. Our program is among the first in the nation using the ultra-fast EXPLORER Total Body PET Scanner.

Ultrasound

We use a device that bounces soundwaves off organs and tissue to produce images. Ultrasound helps us assess developing fetus and musculoskeletal injuries.

Vascular Testing

Vascular testing helps us assess concerns affecting your blood vessels. Our vascular lab maintains national recognition for consistently providing high-quality testing services.

X-Ray

X-ray and fluoroscopy create still or real-time images inside your body. X-ray is a standard method for assessing concerns like broken bones. Fluoroscopy enables us to evaluate body functions, like swallowing.

  • Female patient with comfortable clothes speaking to a physician before her scan

    Before Radiological Studies

Please wear comfortable clothing to your appointment in case we ask you to change into a hospital gown. After filling out some paperwork, our technician brings you back to the imaging area.

  • Male patient going into a diagnostic imaging machine and a female provider is smiling at the patient

    During Diagnostic Imaging

We explain how the scan works and get you into the correct position. You will likely need to sit still and hold your breath briefly while we conduct the test.

  • A radiology resident reviewing scans on a computer

    After Diagnostic Radiology

Technicians perform a quality review of the images then send them to our radiology team. A radiologist interprets the results and communicates their findings to your referring provider. This information may be available on your MyUCDavisHealth or by talking with your care team.

Diagnostic Imaging Safety

When you need an imaging study, it’s natural to be concerned about radiation safety. At UC Davis Health, we have safeguards in place to protect you against unnecessary radiation exposure.

Appropriate Care

You receive the most appropriate type of imaging for your needs. We only recommend advanced imaging studies, like PET scans, if we are confident they’re necessary.

Advanced Technologies

Using the best available equipment enables us to conduct scans using less radiation. It also provides clearer images that may reduce the need for additional tests.

Innovation

UC Davis Imaging Research Center is at the helm of studies that are making imaging scans safer and more accurate. Our team has pioneered new techniques that are advancing the field.
