About the fellowship

The three-year Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators engages promising nurse scholars in a journey of leadership development and mentorship as they complete an innovative project or study. Each year, approximately 10 fellows are selected to receive $450,000 over three years to support their engagement, while their home institution receives $50,000 to offset costs. The fellowship is funded for five full cohorts with the fifth cohort completing its program on June 30, 2027.

Advancing nurse careers

During the program, Betty Irene Moore fellows build skill and confidence in:

  • Leading change
  • Influencing others for system changes that improve health and quality
  • Building professional networks
  • Communicating effectively to diverse audiences
  • Designing and executing high-value programs
  • Bringing new innovations to practice and policy

Time commitment

The online curriculum and mentorship expectations are approximately 60 hours throughout the year. Within that estimate, at least two hours a month are dedicated to monthly program meetings and mentor meetings. In addition, all fellows are required to attend the onsite convocation held in the last two weeks of July in Sacramento, California. The remaining percentage effort is dedicated to the project.

Fellowship alumni engagement

Alumni fellows are welcome to continue to participate in the program after completion and contribute to the network for subsequent fellows. For alumni, the opportunity to stay involved can provide ongoing support as projects and studies enter the next phase of implementation and dissemination. Alumni may continue to participate in the online platform as well as attend convocation.
