Flow Cytometry

Flow Cytometry is an ancillary test that aides in the diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma.  Numerous surface markers, as well as, intracellular markers are offered in combinations intended to optimally identify and characterize leukemic or lymphoid populations.  We offer 10-color flow cytometry on peripheral blood, bone marrow, fluid and tissue samples,  which are processed, stained and analyzed in the flow cytometry lab.  Flow cytometry data are submitted for hematopathologist review and interpretation, and an EMR accessible diagnostic report is generated.  The typical turn-around time for our diagnostic flow cytometry results is within 1-3 days.  Please also note that MRD (Measurable Residual Disease) panels are not performed in our flow cytometry laboratory.  In addition to 10-color flow cytometry, we also perform (1) Immunodeficiency Panels used for serial monitoring of patients with HIV and other immune deficiency states; (2) quantitative lymphocyte subsets (T-, B- and NK-cells; TBNK), a quantitative immune status profile used to determine the percentage and absolute numbers of T-cells, B-cells and Natural Killer (NK) cells that may be helpful for evaluation of patients with primary immune deficiencies, immune monitoring in a variety of clinical scenarios that utilize immunosuppressive therapy, and evaluation of immune reconstitution in the post-transplant setting; (3)  CD3+T-cell levels, used to monitor transplant patients receiving anti-CD3 therapy; and (4) CD19+B-cells, used to monitor B-cell levels in patients receiving anti-CD20 therapy.  Please refer to the Laboratory Test Directory online for a comprehensive list of tests offered.  The Flow Cytometry Lab is staffed 7 days a week (day shift only) for routine and urgent testing, the latter upon clinical request.

Immunology

The Immunology Laboratory offers a variety of tests using different methodologies.  Protein Electrophoresis is performed using a semi-automated, multi-parameter instrument.  This high resolution (delete high resolution) procedure separates normal serum into six major fractions, based on net-charge, size and shape of proteins, which is used to screen serum and urine for protein abnormalities.  Additionally, Immunofixation Electrophoresis is performed on serum and urine and is designed to detect the presence of monoclonal proteins presence (delete presence). The Immunology laboratory also performs allergy testing, which includes total and specific IgE and is performed on an automated instrument that measures the circulating antibody concentration in serum.  The Immunology lab also performs an Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay to detect autoantibodies to Mitochondria, Smooth Muscle and Parietal Cells.  This test aids in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases.  An alphabetic and detailed list of tests performed can be found online in our Laboratory Test Directory.  Please contact the Immunology Laboratory for help with additional questions.  The Immunology Lab is staffed 7 days a week, day shift only.
